A woman has shared how she was charged $18 for DIY avocado on toast at a Melbourne Cafe.

Writer and broadcaster, Jess McGuire, took to her Instagram account after she was served up a very basic piece of bread, half an avocado, feta, salt and lime at The Kettle Black café, in South Melbourne.

“I’m not sure you guys will ever fully understand the level of annoyance I felt being handed this alleged ‘avocado toast with feta’ breakfast that cost $18 today,” she started her post.

“Pretty deconstructed, isn’t it?” I dryly remarked to the waitress, to which she smiled enthusiastically and nodded.”

Jess’s experience has gone viral.

Speaking to ABC Melbourne, Jess explained that her post about the breakfast was tongue in cheek but she looked at the menu and it never said it was a DIY meal.

‘Nothing was put together. So, the toast was on one section, there was what looked to be about 30g of feta in a tiny square on one corner, the kelp salt was put in a line and the avocado was still in its skin.”

What would you have done if served a similar plate?

  • Think I would have walked out.

  • This is really hellarius it’s like a joke I can make better than this at home

  • If you can afford to pay $18 for a meal you would expect something you can’t make at home easily, this is pure robbery and I would have refused to pay. Better off going to buy a whole avocado and just eat that with a spoon.

  • I think I would have sent it back!

  • Yeah that would’ve been a stand up and walk out moment for me. If I’m paying $18 (not that I EVER would for avo on toast) they better be putting it together properly with more than staple ingredients and decorating it with edible gold for that price. Cafe’s are really milking this breakfast in alot of areas and it makes me angry. That plate doesn’t even look like you’d be full from it.

  • I most certainly would not pay $18 for this !

  • That is beyond ridiculous amount to pay for diy

  • The meal should have been served as stated in the menu
Avacado on toast, not next to it

  • It the menu states “on toast” the advocado should be spread on the toast. You can always scrape some off it it is too much.

  • What is on the menu is what you should receive.
I feel sorry for this lady. I’m sure if she wanted to make her self a avo toast. She would of done it herself at home.
People go out for food, for a reason so they don’t have to do anything, prepare, cook and serve.
I myself would of done the same thing, and would of questioned them as to what sort of joke were they playing at?

  • I hate ordering raisin toast and finding I have to butter it myself. I spend every bloody day of my life buttering toast. Just do it for me! And cut it in half. I am paying you! If I’d gotten this I’d have got up and left.

    • I am with you! I want my food prepared and piled on the plate and served up.

  • That doesn’t even look ‘fun’ or a novelty to construct. Looks like a chore with salt resembling a line of coke! Theres something fun about dipping your strawberries in chocolate but that looks OTT.

  • She should be angry at herself, she the idiot who paid $18 for a deconstructed smashed avo

    • Hahaha why do I find this so hilarious! :) $18 for a sandwich :)
