We all like to think our babies are advanced for their age, but this little one is proving she’s well on her way to being nappy-free at the tender age of three-months-old.

Cassie Craig shared footage of her 12-week-old daughter using the potty to poo – which is amazing in itself. But even more incredible, she claims her baby actually ‘wakes’ her up when she needs to go potty. In this case, it was a 4am wake up call to poo.

“When your 3 month old wakes you at 4 am to go potty,” Cassie captioned the video, which has been viewed more than seven and a half million times since she uploaded it four days ago.

Of course, many of those who watched the video were in disbelief.

“My three-month-old grandson got his license today,” mocked Donna Hall in the comments.

“They can’t even control their bladder or bowels at that age. She’s a beautiful girl though,” commented Beth Ousley.

For the disbelievers, Cassie offered up this explanation:

“She wakes/wiggles/cries till I wake. I check the time to see if it’s time for a feeding. If not, she’s obviously waking for a reason. Next to check if her diaper is dirty. It was not. Next step is to take her to the potty to see if she needs to go. She goes right back to bed after.”

What is elimination communication?

Cassie isn’t the first mum to share her baby’s early potty training journey, which is called ‘elimination communication‘.

In fact, there are some parents who have never used a nappy on their babies at all.

According to Go Diaper Free, elimination communication is a gentle way to respond to a baby’s need to poo and wee, from as early as birth. It’s all about tapping into the natural rhythms of a baby’s body, and the belief that like all mammals, babies don’t actually want to soil themselves or their sleep space.

Those who do EC with their babies say it’s not as time consuming as having a baby wearing nappies full time, and it eliminates an average of 18 months in nappies. However, like anything you teach your baby, it takes time.

It works on watching a baby’s cues, intuition, signals and timing.

  • My Mum had my brothers and I potty trained by 4 months. She was horror filled when I told her that I wasnt going to start toilet training my daughter until she was around the 18 months to 2 year age group. My Mum thought I was crazy and should lift my game

  • wow, that’s amazing as such a very young age!

  • Many other cultures have very different ways to raise their children including nappy-free and even walking very early in life. It all depends on the training and how much time you devote to your child and away from phones, computers, etc. Mine were out of nappies very early and loved being out of nappies.

  • I think she is reading bubs cues but if it works for her, awesome.

    • Yes it’s a matter of reading the cues and mums readiness to respond to it

  • My youngest no longer needed nappies when he was 14 months old and I thought that was rare. Now I know it’s not as rare as I thought. He also never crawled until he was 11 months, he started walking at 7 months and before then he would lay on the ground and use his big toe to move him forward.

    • Amazing, what a clever boy !

  • That’s great. If it works for her. My twin boys just turned 3 and are not toilet trained yet. I tried a few weeks ago. But gave up again.

  • Wow that’s impressive and what a saving on nappies.

  • Why do people feel the need to share everything. Poor little kid will hate this when she is older.

  • Good for her! what an achievement at 3 months

  • Can’t believe this if true well the parents know the baby very well

  • Not sure about this. Who does it benefit.. the baby or the parents ????

    • Everyone – no nappies to wash or go into landfill, no rashes on the baby’s bottom, more time to do other nice things and hopefully, no soiled bed linen to wash either. It’s a win-win all around and all it takes is some time to learn.
