Hello!

Aussies partial to a slice of beetroot on their burger or in their salad sanga may have to start forking out big dollars to get their hands on a tin of the much-loved veggie.

Canned beetroot has been in short supply since Cyclone Gabrielle took out the New Zealand-based Golden Circle cannery last year.

Shoppers have taken to social media after noticing empty shelves at their local supermarkets, and it’s prompted savvy resellers to try and make a quick buck on eBay.

Tins of beetroot are popping up for inflated prices on the selling platform, with some demanding up to $60 plus for a single tin. A tin of beetroot at Woolies or Coles usually sells for somewhere around $3.

  • I still have a tin of beetroot in my cupboard. There’s only myself who eats it anyway. I’d rather go without than spend such an expensive price for a tin of it. Caviar is probably cheaper. Maybe the tins contain gold?

  • Why not just use fresh beetroot? That’s insanity.

  • How ridiculous to think people might pay that much for beetroot. I still have a few jars on my shelf at home and I also still have 1.5kg jar of homemade pickled beetroot to slowly munch through, so I wouldn’t pay that sort of price, I’d rather go without.

  • I haven’t noticed the shelves as I had 3 tins of beetroot and still going through the last one. Surely people aren’t going pay those crazy prices for tinned beetroot.

    • It can be hoped that people have more sense.

  • Oh my goodness, that’s crazy ! I quite often buy fresh beetroot and haven’t noticed price change

  • Really? Gosh some people are just crazy! I could live without

  • I love beetroot but there’s no way I’d pay those prices for it. I tried to get some doing an online shop but the only brand available was from China :(

  • My goodness – I love beetroot and didn’t even realise this was an issue! Would never pay that much.

  • Who would pay that for a tin of beetroot?! It won’t sell, that’s just ridiculous! I love beetroot but I can wait til there’s more stock on the shelves

  • I hadn’t noticed, because I wasn’t looking, but this is insane. And I actually have a can or two in my pantry! Anybody??!!

  • I haven’t noticed any shortages in Tassie yet…

    Reply

  • Lucky I’m the only one in my family that loves it ! But I have noticed that it’s missing so I’ve just bought the home brand one where possible

    Reply

  • Greedy and revolting behaviour and hopefully people have more sense than to buy overpriced beetroot.

    Reply

  • Luckily I use it slowly and always have back up in the pantry so I hadn’t even known here was a shortage. A hamburger isn’t a hamburger without beetroot.

  • I’ve been wondering where the beetroot had gone. I usually buy Golden Circle or Edgell and couldn’t find any. I ended up getting a different brand. Time to buy some fresh :)
