Mum has placenta made into art work, which hangs pride of place in her home.
Michelle Amaya-Schmidt, 40, was determined to save her own placenta after giving birth to her first child four months ago with her husband Nathan, 36.
But it seems that eating it or making it into jewellery wasn’t enough for the Albuquerque, New Mexico resident. Instead, she had the bloody organ made into five art prints that now hang in her young son’s bedroom, reports Daily Mail.
Amaya-Schmidt said, ‘I wanted to catalogue every aspect of his birth and remember it forever — and that included making a print.’
She first had the idea after her doula, Alyssa Hope, suggested it; Amaya-Schmidt had never heard of such a thing before, but she agreed.
So, after a quick labour that lasted just four hours, the new mum handed over the afterbirth. The doula then placed the still-wet placenta onto crisp white paper, removing it to reveal artful smears.
She returned weeks later with five prints, which Amaya-Schmidt used to decorate her house.
‘I was delighted by it,’ she said. ‘I’ve put it up in his room surrounded by other mementos from his birth, like his hand and foot prints and ultrasound photos.’
‘People thought it was very unusual, but I explained to them what it is and why I did it, and now they think it’s kind of cool,’ she said.
‘My husband Nathan wasn’t freaked out by it,’ she added. ‘He thinks the prints are great.’
After she made the prints, the doula steamed, dehydrated, and ground the placenta into a powder and filled sixty capsules.
