Melbourne woman who confessed to killing her infant daughter is mentally unwell and has asked not to front court.

Sofina Nikat, 22, was due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court today charged with murdering 14-month-old Sanaya Sahib, but the brief hearing took place without her and she was remanded in custody to reappear in August.

Her lawyer, Michael McNamara, said she had been seen by psychiatric professionals who were worried about the effect a court appearance could have on her, adding: “It’s my client’s preference she not be brought up.”

7 News report shocking EXCLUSIVE pictures led to the dramatic police breakthrough.

Sofina yesterday appeared in the out of sessions hearing. Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said the accused had made a “full confession” to the murder of her daughter.

  • May the angel rest in peace and I hope she is in a better place.

  • Such an incredibly sad story. So often people who need the most support slip under the radar. Mental illness are not visible – all too easy to judge. Poor lady, poor little girl. So very sad.

  • “My clients preference” did that poor angel get a preference to live or die. Why should a murderer

  • How sad. Poor little girl. She should go to jail!

  • She has admitted guilt so surely a trial can go ahead whether she want to appear or not.

  • This s an awful story. Sad.

  • Maybe, just maybe, if she had accidently killed her in a fit of rage, she could blame it on her illness, but to concoct the story she did it a sign of a premeditated offence. She should be made to feel how her little angel felt in those last moments. I\’m sorry but I have been a Mum with mental illness and have snapped at my children but even when they were that little, but never had thoughts of killing them. I have no sympathy for her. I hope she rots in jail.

  • I’m quite disgusted by this decision.

  • She would definitely be mentally unwell to take her own childs life. We don’t know the full story so best not judge too much. She may have been calling out for help and not received any. Either way a little girl has lost her life too soon

  • I’m sick of everyone who does something wrong and gets caught going – Oh but I have a mental illness! – IT IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO KILL SOMEONE!! And stop tainting everyone else who has a mental illness and manages to not kill people! – Stop palming it off as one.

From the way she walked calmly out of that park in the CCTV footage, and the attempt at covering herself with a “attacker story” makes me think this was planned and thought through.

Lawyers who use the “My client suffers from a mental illness and isn’t fit to stand trial” really need to think long and hard about the actual offence that was committed and the facts submitted to the public by police and media before putting that plea forward. If they dont think they can win in court without using “Mental illness” as a copout then maybe they are in the wrong profession?

  • Ridiculous, but she was fit enough to kill her own kid.

    • Exactly what I thought… if she was sick in the first place- she should have sought professional help before she went off the rails… This makes me so angry!
