There’s no doubt about it – jaffle makers are some of the BEST appliances in the kitchen for keeping hungry mouths fed all year round.

Is a jaffle maker the same as a toastie maker?

Traditionally, jaffle makers are types of sandwich presses that seal the top and bottom slices together – brilliant for keeping delectable fillings contained. A toastie maker, on the other hand, pretty much refers to any type of sandwich press appliance, from flat-press styles for homemade bread to compact snack makers fit for camping. But a lot of people use the terms interchangeably!

Toasties are a national treasure in Australia, and it stands to good reason that you want your jaffle maker to be fit for the task. So to help you out, we’ve done a deep dive into all things crispy, toastie and delicious to uncover our community’s favourite appliances. You’re welcome.

Jaffle Maker Buying Tips

  • What style do you want? As mentioned, there are different appliances available for different styles of toasties. If you want the freedom of being able to toast various shapes and sizes of bread, go for a flat-press style, with a flat top and bottom plate. If you want to make your toastie from regular loaf slices with crispy sealed edges, a jaffle maker is your best bet.
  • What size do you want? Got a big family to feed? You might be better off going for a jumbo four-sandwich jaffle maker. On the other hand, if it’s just the occasional toastie on the menu, you’ll be fine with a single or double unit.
  • Who will use it? If you’ve got young cooks under your roof, consider a unit with a cool-touch handle and auto-shut-off, just in case distracted kids forget to switch it off!
  • Do you need space-saving storage? Some clever jaffle makers are designed for upright storage, so consider this if you’re low on shelf space in your kitchen cupboards.

What To Make With Your Jaffle Maker or Sandwich Press

Bored with baked beans in your toasties? Mums all over Australia are popping on their chef hats and getting creative with the sandwich press. Take a peek at some of the gems they’ve whipped up:

  • Toasted Jaffle Cakes – Swap bread for cake batter and you have delicious triangular cakes! Obviously, this will only work in a traditional jaffle maker that holds the batter in place.
  • Apple Pie Jaffles – A sheet of puff pastry and some gently cooked apples are all it takes to whip up individual apple pies worthy of your favourite guests. Oh and don’t forget a good dusting of icing sugar.
  • Ham, Brie & Mango Chutney Toasties – Savoury with just a touch of sweetness, this twist on the traditional toastie is every foodie’s dream!
  • Smoked Gouda & Granny Smith Apple Toasties – The perfect way to use up all those apples in the fruit bowl! Pro tip – use brioche for extra wow.
  • Ham & Cheese Toastie With Chutney – A dollop of good chutney transforms a lunchtime staple into a gourmet meal. The kids will love it.

  • We have the Breville the original. Second time we have owned it. Absolutely love it and highly recommend. I do not recommend the cheap ones, we had the Kmart one under $10 and it was so terrible!

  • The 3 in 1 above looks like the way to go! Such a great concept because my hubby likes using our sandwich press for everything and while similar, it is not quite the same as a jaffle maker as it’s all flat. When you have that set up you can use for burritos, frying burger patties and more. That being said, I do miss the jaffle concept of having it all so nicely sealed.

  • Oh, looking at this article brought back memories and made me drool. Somehow we have gotten away from Jaffles and tend to use the sandwich press now but looking at all those above makes me want to get one, just for nostalgia! They were always such a tasty and filling option.

  • I like all the filling ideas, especially the apple pie idea.

  • We do love to eat a variety of sweet and savoury toasties and we also love to make jaffles with a variety of sweet and savoury fillings and sometimes combine the two flavours. Jaffles are so terrific for fillings that tend to ooze. We do love to make hot jaffles that are bursting with fillings.

  • I never had a jaffle maker but we do have a flat press toastie maker which was given once by a good friend. Back when my 3 eldest kids were in high school the toastie maker was used a lot, but now a days the toastie maker comes hardly out of the cupboard, so I don’t really feel the need to get a jaffle maker.

  • I love to make toasties and also love to make jaffles; they are both so yummy and good to eat when the weather starts to cool. A hot toastie or jaffle with a hot cuppa is so terrific. I do like the three in one appliance; this is my kind of practical appliance.

  • Jaffle makers are just not my thing. Ive had them growing up but never loved it. I love the crunchy outside but find the centre just too soft and gooey. Im definitely more of a toastie girly that’s for sure! I cant believe they’ve remained popular since i was a kid.

  • I absolutely love my four jaffles at a time maker – it’s so good when all the kids come home from school at the same time, hungry. No-one has to wait for the first round! Definitely recommend this if you have more than two kids. It’s just as easy to clean and store as a smaller one.

  • I don’t even own a jaffle maker anymore. I find a sandwich press is a lot more versatile because i can cook so much more in it but sometimes having an actual jaffle maker might be handy to stop fillings from falling out. I’m just not sure it justifies having another appliance 🤔

  • I love the idea of making individual apple pies using a jaffle maker.

  • This is something that I have never owned. My partner moved in a few months ago and he has one and again I have never used it. I have so many gadgets in my kitchen that never get used and I really dount that i will ever get into using one

  • I have tried a few different toastie makers but the Original Breville toastie maker is definitely the best of the lot. I recently re-purchased one after being disappointed in the other ones after my first Breville died. I’ll never try another brand as the Breville one is the original and definitely the best one on the market.

  • I like the 2 in 1 and the 3 in 1 options. Very handy and space saving.

  • I haven’t had a jaffle maker since the 90s and early 2000s! This brings back some nostalgia. We use our George Foreman grill for our toasties but will need to get one of these just for ease, then I won’t have to cut their toasties into triangles.

  • Oh yum, I love a good toastie. Ooey gooey melted cheese. Yummo

  • I love a jaffle, but cleaning the machine is a bigger task than what the pay off delivers. Flat grills are versatile and make a great panini.

  • I have a sandwich press and I think it’s definitely one of my my used cooking appliances.
