Medical professionals share concerns antibiotics could compromise how well vaccines work.

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute are conducting pre-clinical trials to determine whether infants exposed to antibiotics in early stages of life have significantly poorer responses to vaccines, shares 9 news.

Researchers believe that antibiotics disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria in the digestive system, which impairs the way infants respond to immunisations.

“Up to 50 percent of infants in Australia are exposed to antibiotics in their first year of life,” Researcher, Professor David Lynn told 9News.

Researchers believe the impact antibiotics have on vaccines could be reversed with a simple probiotic or booster shot.

Health experts and researchers say parents should not delay immunising their children regardless of the trial’s outcome.

The study will take several years to complete with human trials yet to start.

  • Interesting. hope they do more research to better inform us of this – children might need further boosters to keep their immunity

  • This is a difficult topic to discuss because if there is a genuine need to give your child antibiotics than you need to do it. My daughter first got sick when she was 8 Mo and she ended up having a nasty throat and chest infection that was concerning to be tonsillitis so I had to give her antibiotics. Since then she hasn’t had anymore and has had all her immunisation and still rarely gets sick.
This is another ploy to scare parents. However I’ll say it, don’t be scared. Do what you think is best for your child.

  • Many Doctors now don’t give antibiotics unless it is necessary. Unfortunately I’ve just had some as I had an infection in my arm after having a cannula in it for 2 days. The hospital staff were so thorough cleaning the area of my skin before inserting it too. The area was still painful and hot after a week so I went to local Dr. Normally soreness can take a few days to disappear. I accidentally bent my arm with it in a couple of times while I was asleep and the hospital staff thought that was the cause of the pain. I also had antibiotics when I was small for acute tonsillitis. Eventually they had to remove them as they were poisoning my bloodstream.

  • Hopefully they can figure it out and make sure it can be fixed

  • Again – another trial and research. I hope parents do not get alarmed.

  • I hate antibiotics and have seen the damaging effect it can have on digestive health and health in general and where possible I like to avoid it. One thing we can do is giving a good probiotic on the moment our kids need an antibiotic (something like Inner Health Plus or alike).

  • This will be an interesting study. I know myself as a baby I was given a lot of antibiotics, I think we had less vaccines then. Was left with my teeth being dis-coloured even though I did not even have my baby teeth, so not sure how my adult teeth were stained.

  • Unfortunately I was on IV antibiotics not long after my daughter was born so she got some through my milk. I told the hospital I didn’t want them but they were not very appreciative of that.

  • Maybe they should be giving probiotics with antibiotics now.

  • This is pretty important to know, especially if the solution is o simple.

  • I’ll be interested to see the outcomes of this research.

    • It is an area of research that interests me too. I recently read research on probiotics too. Antibiotics and probiotics is an interesting area of research.
