  • Dentist approved!

Hubby and I went to the dentist for our check-ups and hubby was very pleased at his glowing report card from his doc! My dentist's reaction was no less pleasing to me, not because I had improved, but because I had not deteriorated.

As I mentioned in my application to review the airfloss, I take oral hygiene seriously (something my parents instilled in me after their own horrible experiences of poor health) and though I felt pleased with the airfloss myself, I wasn't certain that it was doing just as good a job as manual flossing. I have always had a pretty good report card from my dentist and so I knew that if anything weren't right, he'd make no bones about it. I asked him to note carefully whether he could see a difference in the plaque between the teeth and hetold me flat out that my teeth looked as good as they always had.

This may not sound much, but tome it is very, very impressive. I have professional confirmation that the airfloss is not only saving me time and effort, but it is also doing a great job. With that final tick in every box, I went out and bought my hubby one today.

Thank you MoM for introducing us to this great health care appliance, and thank you Philips for making it!

  • Full marks for me

Well the best test for the airfloss has just been passed with flying colours in my book. Went to the dentist for the 6 monthly check-up and he reckoned he could see the difference between last time and this time. Now I know that I wasn't flossing any more than had done before since my last review with the dentist. The only thing I have done differently was using the airfloss. I think it's made an improvement because I can actually be bothered to do it.

I wasn't sure what to expect when my wife cracked this out for me to try, but I think it's a keeper. I guess that's lucky because my wife already bought another one for me! Cheers for the shot at trying this out. It was well worth it!

  • Fresh breath again

I am so astounded at how easy and quick the air floss is. I would always put off flossing for the amount of time it takes and the string always getting caught between my teeth and almost shredding. But not with the air floss, it's so powerful at getting those bits left over out that I never knew were hiding.

  • Week 4

My wife and I share one Sonicare Airfloss I had go go back to using floss as I am on a business trip at the moment. It is a very weird feeling having to floss again as I've got used to the great results and how easy and hygienic is using Sonicare. I probably will have to get one myself that when I am traveling I can take it with me. It would be great if it was a bit cheaper. Overall fantastic!

  • Wow!!! The AirFloss is easy to use. & amazingly effective

I am going to eat steak for the first time in a very long time as I always get meat stuck whether I floss or not. The AirFloss is awesome. It is simple to assemble, easy to use & very efficient at flossing. I have never been able to floss my whole mouth in 2 minutes, it's usually half an hour if I haven't given up by then.

The only thing I would mention to a first time user is when you use it in front of the mirror the first time as you can't wait to see how it works - be prepared to clean that mirror. I will be flossing in the shower from now on, no big deal

  • Life saver

Talk about a life saver.... Or should I say teeth saver? As a grown man with braces it has been hard to keep my braces clean & free from stains, & flossing.. Well that just impossible. But now I can get between the teeth aswell as it's great to whip over the band itself incase anything small gets lodged between the bracket and tooth.

  • Time saver

When I first started using the air floss 2x weeks ago, my gums used to bleed a little as I'm not much of a flosses due to the time it takes. Now they don't bleed at all, which is proof in the pudding that there was a little gingivitis there. And now there's not.

  • Won't use anything else

After using the Sonicare Airflloss I won't use any other product to floss my teeth. It is very easy and convenient way to clean your teeth. I am very happy with it.

  • Still easier and that's why I like it.

Still using the airfloss with mouthwash and I think it definitely works as well as normal flossing. My mouth feels cleaner than it did before and I think my breath is fresher. I think it might be because I use the airfloss a couple of times a day because it's easier. With old floss, sometimes I couldn't be bothered. I have a dentist checkup on Saturday so we'll see what he thinks of the outcome!

  • The honeymoon may be over......

....but now it's true love! So I have to admit that the initial fun of playing with the Airfloss has waned and now I can review it with a calmer outlook. The reality for me is, that this is still a fantastic product. Even when you take the excitement out of having a new toy, you really do still have a great oral hygiene product. The only reason I can't say it is the best dental product I've ever used is because I love my electric toothbrush just a smidgen more. The airfloss has become a normal part of my daily routine. It's faster and tidier than floss alone and I wouldn't be without it now.

  • It does the trick!

So this is my fourth and final review. Yes - its a great product. It does the job its supposed to do. Simple, easy and effective. The more you use it the better and easier it gets. My mouth feels much better for the experience. Enjoy the easiness of a clean, fresh, healthy smile.

  • Its actually really very good you know!

Ok so in my last review I'd stopped using for a while as I admit it, I'm lazy. I then had a good look in the mirror (at my teeth that is) and noticed the little bits of gunk that my toothbrush just wasn't reaching were beginning to creep back. Time to pick up the air-flosser again. Honestly this is the equivalent of Batman's utility belt for teeth. My teeth and gums are looking great again and I can smile with confidence. Great product. Listen in for my final installment in (roughly) a weeks time.

  • What a difference.

Oh I admit it, I got a little too busy and tired and lazy at nights and ended up skipping the air floss for about a week. Not because it takes a long time as it is super quick but just because I couldn't be bothered. I found with brushing alone I still wasn't getting in between all the nooks and crannies and after a week I could tell I desperately needed the air floss. You wouldn't think a bit of air and water would do such a great job but it really does. After a week of using the air floss again my teeth are sparkly on the fronts and in between the gaps :)

  • Great charge

Review number 3 (sorry it's a little late), I have found the charge held on this little baby to be great, I haven't needed to recharge it, I find because I now have the hang of using it it no longer takes me as long to give a quick floss therefor the battery has lasted ages.

  • Yep its good

Ok, so I've been a bit slacker with the airfloss this week. Its still good, don't get me wrong, but the novelty has worn off. Its still a great product but it just seems like something extra to do (I am a strict non flosser). My aim is to get back into it again this week. Again, still a great product..

  • Practice makes perfect

Review 2, since my first week of trialing the airfloss I have found now I am getting quicker at using it with less mee and fuss. One time I spat out the fluid in my mouth and I could see the results from the airfloss getting out the stuff in between my teeth. It no longer takes ages to position and get it right, I can do a quick after brush floss within a good minute. I also find that with regular use it is helping to keep my teeth clean and I am not getting any build up.

  • Easy to clean with.. and up from!

Ok.. I hate flossing, period. I just can't stand in front of the mirror with a piece of string hack-sawing my gums to pieces. Yeah, I brush, I use mouth wash etc but I just do not floss. Until now that is. Yep, its not really flossing technically I suppose but the air floss does a really good job. Ignore the silly advert of the woman with the huge grin putting the airflosser up to each tooth. You do that and you're liable to spray everybody in a ten foot radius. That and have to clean your bathroom mirror every day. Plus if you do a suggestion and put mouth wash in instead of water I think you could possibly blind yourself/somebody nearby? When you get used to it though, its really good. You can be all airflossed clean in under two minutes. Mouth washing after is a good idea too though. I was just wondering.. do you think they could make an air-cleaning tool for other parts of the body to make that easier too?

  • Messy but fun.

Ok so I didn't actually know I was accepted to trial this product until the postie delivered it. I was so excited as I hate flossing because it's just to hard and fiddly trying to get the string in the right spot and it often caused my gums to bleed. I read the instructions and popped it on charge. Once charged I couldn't wait to try it out with hubby. Well that was a messy job, water went everywhere. It was a bit of trial and error at first and lots of laughs later but now I think I have it down packed. definitely close your mouth and not to leave it wide open to see whats going on in there. I was surprised at how well the clean was, I did get blood twice but it hasn't happened again. Mostly it was a great thorough clean but I did have one time where it took a few skirts of the button to clean one spot properly. Great product so far, easy and very quick to use and fun. I look forward to seeing how the next 3 weeks/reviews go. The only complaint I would have about it so far would be the cost, it's quite expensive for the average family to afford.

Mother’s instinct is a funny thing. At home, we trust it without question. But put us in a hospital setting with an unwell child, surrounded by doctors, nurses and monitors, and suddenly we start doubting ourselves.

What if I’m overreacting?
What if I’ve got it wrong?

So we stay quiet, even when we know something just isn’t right with our child. I’ve been there myself – when my usually ‘tough’ son was doubled over with stomach pain. I was told in the emergency department that it probably wasn’t his appendix. But I knew he wouldn’t have begged me to take him to hospital unless it was serious. Because I know him better than anyone. Turns out, it was appendicitis.

It’s a really common place for parents to land. You’re grateful for the care your child is getting, but at the same time, you feel this huge responsibility to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Here’s the thing though: that instinct you’re feeling? It matters more than you might think.

Why your gut feeling matters more than you realise

According to Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital, Leticia Jackson, parents bring something to the hospital that no test or machine ever could.

“Parents often say they ‘just know’ when something isn’t quite right with their child, and in a hospital, that gut feeling is incredibly valuable,” she explains.

Leticia Jackson, Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital

While medical teams rely on observations, tests and equipment, parents know the little details. The way your child usually smiles. How they react when they’re tired. What’s normal for them.

So when something feels “off”, even if everything looks okay on paper, it can actually be an early warning sign.

“When parents trust those instincts and speak up, this creates a powerful partnership that can sometimes catch a problem before it becomes an emergency,” Leticia says.

Worried about speaking up? You’re not alone

A lot of parents hesitate about advocating for their child.

You don’t want to come across as difficult. You don’t want to question the people caring for your child. And sometimes, you just don’t feel confident enough to push the issue.

Leticia gets it.

“It is completely understandable for parents to feel hesitant,” she says. “No one wants to be seen as difficult or to second-guess the hardworking people caring for their child.”

But here’s a helpful way to look at it: you’re not challenging the medical team, you’re helping them.

Parents are the constant. Staff change shifts, care for multiple patients, and rely on snapshots of information. You’re there the whole time, noticing the subtle changes.

“Our medical team doesn’t view a concerned parent as overreactive, but as a partner,” Leticia explains. “Your voice matters.”

Remember, we know our children better than anyone.

What to do if you’re worried: the Raise It process

If you’re in a NSW public hospital or health service and you’re worried about you or your child’s condition getting worse, there is a clear process you can follow called Raise It.

Raise It is designed to help patients, carers and family members get help fast if they’re worried about a change in their loved one’s condition.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Talk: Start by speaking to a nurse, midwife, doctor or health worker about your concerns.
  2. Ask: Still worried? Ask to speak to the nurse or midwife in charge and request a Clinical Review.
  3. Call: If you’re still concerned, you can escalate further using the Raise It process to get urgent attention from a senior health worker.

You don’t need medical knowledge. You don’t need to be certain. If you feel something isn’t right, or your child is getting worse, Raise It. You just need to speak up.

What should you actually look out for?

Sometimes it’s not one big, obvious sign. It can be small, subtle changes that just don’t sit right.

Things like:

  • Changes in breathing (fast, laboured or noisy)
  • Skin looking pale, mottled, or developing unusual rashes
  • Your child being unusually drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
  • Confusion or behaviour that’s out of character
  • Pain that isn’t improving with treatment
  • Or simply that feeling that your child is getting worse

And sometimes, it’s just that gut feeling you can’t explain.

That’s enough.

“You are helping us, not bothering us”

If there’s one message Leticia wants parents to take away, it’s that you aren’t bothering the medical team, you’re helping them.

“In my years as a Nurse Unit Manager, I can say with absolute certainty that many critical changes in a child’s condition have been identified first by a parent. While our clinical staff are highly skilled at performing regular observations and interpreting data, parents are the only constant presence who truly know their child’s baseline behaviour, personality, and what is normal for them.

“I have seen numerous instances where a parent’s insistence that their child is “just not themselves” – despite vital signs appearing relatively stable – has prompted a deeper clinical review that uncovered everything from early signs of sepsis to a life-threatening respiratory crisis.”

The Raise It process exists because healthcare teams know how important parents are in keeping children safe.

“Speaking up doesn’t mean you don’t trust the team,” she says. “It means you’re partnering with us to make sure nothing gets missed.”

And if you’re still worried about being judged?

“Whether your concern turns out to be something or nothing, your instinct to raise it is always valid.”

Mouths of Mums is proudly working with NSW Health to bring you this important article.

  • You should never second guess yourself when it comes to yours or your childs health- or anyones for that matter. Go with your thoughts. It is natural to want to protect a loved one especially when it comes to health situations, and the feeling you get when you think you didnt do enough to advocate or fight for them…it is not a kind or nice way to feel. Many people have ended up being heartbroken and picking up pieces for years because of feeling they didnt do enough.

    Reply

  • A very good and informative article. I have read so many stories about mums just knowing when things are not right and demanding second and third opinions until they got the right answer. Sometimes mums just know. It is our job as care takers of our families. Listen to your gut!

  • Years ago, I spoke up for my 14-year-old daughter, but my concerns weren’t fully listened to. I’ve always wished I had pushed harder. She was sent home without much testing, and two days later, she passed away.
So, if you ever have concerns—no matter how minor—please speak up and keep advocating. Trust your instincts; they are there for a reason.

  • This is so important for parents to know how to raise it further if they don’t think their child is receiving the medical support they need! I know this article refers to the NSW system but other systems have similar procedures just with different names. I know in QLD it’s called Ryan’s Rule.

    Reply

  • It’s so important to follow your gut instincts and express your concerns indeed. I have never hesitated to advocate for my children in various situations and I don’t care what other people think about it. Not all doctors and medical staff appreciate it when you question them, I’ve experienced that it may result in angry indignant responses.

    Reply

  • How true this is! While nurses and doctors are the medical professionals doing their job on the daily, we know our children better than anyone and what is ‘normal’ for them. I would always speak up if I had noticed any changes in my child’s health and encourage other parents to do so too. No question is silly!

    Reply

  • This really is such an important issue and a good topic to discuss with people, I am often surprised that people are worried about being judged. This is not something I care about; the priority is for the care and health of everyone is my family. Parents know their children and need to work with health professionals for the best outcomes for their children.

    Reply

  • This is such an important issue to raise, and no one should ever feel ashamed, nervous or that they are being OTT for advocating for their kids, themselves or loves ones in hospital. In QLD we have Ryan’s Rule. A three step process where your concern will be escalated if they believe the patients condition isn’t improving or is worsening.

    Reply

  • I have never been afraid to advocate for my children and partner and extended family and also friends. It is so important to listen and to trust intuition. When people have not listened, I have persevered and kept on with insisting on care and making sure they truly listened and took action.
