  • Extra special sparkle

I do believe my husband and I are very lucky to own one of these toothbrushes, they are amazing and I don't think I would ever go back to a manual toothbrush after using one of these beauties. If and when I am going to get my children to have electric brush's and I think they clean better and are easier to use. I think they give our teeth that extra special sparkle.

Still using and have used for at least 1 year now and still loving it every day. This Toothbrush has been awesome for my husband and I and we take it every where we go. Whether we are at home or away for the weekend it comes with us!

I am very impressed about how clean my teeth are and it never ceases to amaze me with the quality it brings. Definitely my number one toothbrush and I know so many more that they would say that its their number one toothbrush as well!

Still using the Philips Sonicare FlexCare+ and still loving it! Our dentist says that the electronic toothbrushes are way better that the manual ones and is really happy that my husband and I are using them. So far I have recommended the Philips Sonicare FlexCare+ to about 8 people and about 5 of the 8 have bought this particular toothbrush and is loving the results. They say its well worth the money!

  • End Result!

With my trial period over and just having a dental appointment, my dentist was happy with the cleanliness of the base of my teeth and the health of my gums, given the poor standard they were the last time I was there. So thank you to Mouth of Mums and the sponsors very much, not only have I enjoyed this trial but you have saved me some 'REAL' money in my future dentistry.

As sad as that sounds I really like this toothbrush, I really gives my gums and teeth a good work out and leaves them feeling fresh, clean and more healthier. • Birthday present!

I know what to get my mother-in-law now for her birthday, I have been trialling this product for over a month and both my husband and I love it and we keep bragging about it to my parents who have now bought one and to my other family and friends. My husbands mum can't afford much and I think that this product would get its use out of it if we bought for her birthday and then too she can brag about it.

  • Amazing Charge Life

So this is my final review of the Phillips Sonicare Flex+ and I have to say it has beena pleasure trialling this product. I will not go back to a "manual" toothbrush and have already gone and bought replacement heads for when needed. I am also very happy to report I have my toothbrush on charge - the second time since starting this review , the first time being when we received the product. That is incredible - and considering it has been used 4 times a day that is a terrific charging capability. I am in love with my Phillips Sonicare Flex+ and I and my mouth/teeth thankyou MoM for giving us the chance to be a part of this amazing trial .

  • Still loving it!

I still love using the Philips Sonicare FlexCare+ tooth brush. We went away for a couple of days and took the toothbrushes with us in the carrier. The battery lasted for the 2 nights and the carrier kept our toothbrushes clean and dry. The only thing so far I would improve, and it is merely my personal preference would be to offer toothbrush heads that offer different bristles. I always prefer strong stiff bristles while my wife prefers soft bristles. I did not notice the difference as first. But since using the toothbrush continuously for a few weeks, I find myself wanting harder bristles. However, I will not be going back to my manual toothbrush as I've noticed a cleaner feeling and look to my teeth with continued use.

  • Great in some ways... not so great in others

So, in summary my teeth feel cleaner and it's easy and comfortable to use. But I would still prefer firmer bristles (my own personal taste). I still revert to my old faithful every now again if I can't be bothered switching the heads over from my wife's brush. Maybe she should buy me one of my own!

  • No going back to manual for me!

I'm sold. My manual toothbrush will be put to new uses cleaning small hard to reach areas of the shower or basin. I always wondered what the hype was about an electric toothbrush, until I tried one. My teeth feel so much cleaner, and cleaning my teeth is actually enjoyable now - no longer a chore! The small head means I'm really get right into every nook and cranny and I feel like I am really taking care of my teeth now. Thanks so much for the opportunity to review this great product.

  • The old dog going back to old tricks?

My husband isn't yet completely sold on the toothbrush, which may be one part laziness and 2 parts personal preference. As we are sharing the brush, unless change the head to his one for him, he reverts to using his old faithful super firm toothbrush. He did say that if I bought him his own which he didn't have to keep swapping the heads over then he would probably stick to using it. He also still says that he doesn't feel the head bristles are firm enough for him to feel like he is getting a great clean.

  • The love affair continues

starting week 3 of the review and I'm fully converted to the FlexCare+. I won't be returning to my old faithful manual toothbrush. A visit to the dentist last week confirmed that the brush is suiting my needs perfectly and the small head really helping me reach the troublesome back teeth and keep them clean, delaying the inevitable decay!! I don't notice the strange "vibration" any more - it's completely comfortable and I love my new toothbrush to bits!

  • A great product, but takes some getting used to...

(from last week which wouldn't post properly)... my husband has been continuing to use the FlexCare+ toothbrush, however feels that the brush itself isn't firm enough for his personal liking. His regular toothbrush was always a firm one and he felt that gave his teeth the best clean - even though his teeth feel clean with the FlexCare+, he isn't as yet convinced that it will replace his old favourite firm manual toothbrush.

  • It's been over a week now and I'm not used to the "strange vibrating sensation". I actually look forward to cleaning my teeth, and can feel how clean they are after brushing. The small head is fantastic for reaching my back teeth. Each day I change the setting just to try something different - I can't say I have a favourite - they all seem to feel like a vast improvement on a manual toothbrush! I'm a convert and have already researched where to buy replacement heads from. I can see a lifelong friendship with my Flexcare+

  • A male's perspective

My partner used the Flexcare+ today for the first time, and he said it is a really strange sensation. He persisted with it, and it was still a really strange sensation. But he isn't stopping there and will be trying again tomorrow. His teeth definitely feel cleaner, but it's just a new feeling that was unexpected. And he commented that it sounds a bit like a dentists drill !!!

  • Wow! I can't stop running my tongue along my nice clean teeth!

Today was my first ever experience with an electric toothbrush. The sensation at first was a little offputting, and I think I have ticklish teeth. But after getting used to the sensation it was very addictive! I had a play with all the options and found one which was most comfortable for my mouth. My teeth do genuinely feel cleaner than what I could achieve with a manual toothbrush. I also like the convenience of the docking station to make sure it's always charged and ready to go. So totally impressed with the toothbrush after a single use, and looking forward to cleaning my teeth again! I haven't yet tried out the sanitising function, but the theory of it sounds awesome!

Mother’s instinct is a funny thing. At home, we trust it without question. But put us in a hospital setting with an unwell child, surrounded by doctors, nurses and monitors, and suddenly we start doubting ourselves.

What if I’m overreacting?
What if I’ve got it wrong?

So we stay quiet, even when we know something just isn’t right with our child. I’ve been there myself – when my usually ‘tough’ son was doubled over with stomach pain. I was told in the emergency department that it probably wasn’t his appendix. But I knew he wouldn’t have begged me to take him to hospital unless it was serious. Because I know him better than anyone. Turns out, it was appendicitis.

It’s a really common place for parents to land. You’re grateful for the care your child is getting, but at the same time, you feel this huge responsibility to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Here’s the thing though: that instinct you’re feeling? It matters more than you might think.

Why your gut feeling matters more than you realise

According to Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital, Leticia Jackson, parents bring something to the hospital that no test or machine ever could.

“Parents often say they ‘just know’ when something isn’t quite right with their child, and in a hospital, that gut feeling is incredibly valuable,” she explains.

Leticia Jackson, Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital

While medical teams rely on observations, tests and equipment, parents know the little details. The way your child usually smiles. How they react when they’re tired. What’s normal for them.

So when something feels “off”, even if everything looks okay on paper, it can actually be an early warning sign.

“When parents trust those instincts and speak up, this creates a powerful partnership that can sometimes catch a problem before it becomes an emergency,” Leticia says.

Worried about speaking up? You’re not alone

A lot of parents hesitate about advocating for their child.

You don’t want to come across as difficult. You don’t want to question the people caring for your child. And sometimes, you just don’t feel confident enough to push the issue.

Leticia gets it.

“It is completely understandable for parents to feel hesitant,” she says. “No one wants to be seen as difficult or to second-guess the hardworking people caring for their child.”

But here’s a helpful way to look at it: you’re not challenging the medical team, you’re helping them.

Parents are the constant. Staff change shifts, care for multiple patients, and rely on snapshots of information. You’re there the whole time, noticing the subtle changes.

“Our medical team doesn’t view a concerned parent as overreactive, but as a partner,” Leticia explains. “Your voice matters.”

Remember, we know our children better than anyone.

What to do if you’re worried: the Raise It process

If you’re in a NSW public hospital or health service and you’re worried about you or your child’s condition getting worse, there is a clear process you can follow called Raise It.

Raise It is designed to help patients, carers and family members get help fast if they’re worried about a change in their loved one’s condition.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Talk: Start by speaking to a nurse, midwife, doctor or health worker about your concerns.
  2. Ask: Still worried? Ask to speak to the nurse or midwife in charge and request a Clinical Review.
  3. Call: If you’re still concerned, you can escalate further using the Raise It process to get urgent attention from a senior health worker.

You don’t need medical knowledge. You don’t need to be certain. If you feel something isn’t right, or your child is getting worse, Raise It. You just need to speak up.

What should you actually look out for?

Sometimes it’s not one big, obvious sign. It can be small, subtle changes that just don’t sit right.

Things like:

  • Changes in breathing (fast, laboured or noisy)
  • Skin looking pale, mottled, or developing unusual rashes
  • Your child being unusually drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
  • Confusion or behaviour that’s out of character
  • Pain that isn’t improving with treatment
  • Or simply that feeling that your child is getting worse

And sometimes, it’s just that gut feeling you can’t explain.

That’s enough.

“You are helping us, not bothering us”

If there’s one message Leticia wants parents to take away, it’s that you aren’t bothering the medical team, you’re helping them.

“In my years as a Nurse Unit Manager, I can say with absolute certainty that many critical changes in a child’s condition have been identified first by a parent. While our clinical staff are highly skilled at performing regular observations and interpreting data, parents are the only constant presence who truly know their child’s baseline behaviour, personality, and what is normal for them.

“I have seen numerous instances where a parent’s insistence that their child is “just not themselves” – despite vital signs appearing relatively stable – has prompted a deeper clinical review that uncovered everything from early signs of sepsis to a life-threatening respiratory crisis.”

The Raise It process exists because healthcare teams know how important parents are in keeping children safe.

“Speaking up doesn’t mean you don’t trust the team,” she says. “It means you’re partnering with us to make sure nothing gets missed.”

And if you’re still worried about being judged?

“Whether your concern turns out to be something or nothing, your instinct to raise it is always valid.”

  • You should never second guess yourself when it comes to yours or your childs health- or anyones for that matter. Go with your thoughts. It is natural to want to protect a loved one especially when it comes to health situations, and the feeling you get when you think you didnt do enough to advocate or fight for them…it is not a kind or nice way to feel. Many people have ended up being heartbroken and picking up pieces for years because of feeling they didnt do enough.

  • A very good and informative article. I have read so many stories about mums just knowing when things are not right and demanding second and third opinions until they got the right answer. Sometimes mums just know. It is our job as care takers of our families. Listen to your gut!

  • Years ago, I spoke up for my 14-year-old daughter, but my concerns weren’t fully listened to. I’ve always wished I had pushed harder. She was sent home without much testing, and two days later, she passed away.
So, if you ever have concerns—no matter how minor—please speak up and keep advocating. Trust your instincts; they are there for a reason.

  • This is so important for parents to know how to raise it further if they don’t think their child is receiving the medical support they need! I know this article refers to the NSW system but other systems have similar procedures just with different names. I know in QLD it’s called Ryan’s Rule.

  • It’s so important to follow your gut instincts and express your concerns indeed. I have never hesitated to advocate for my children in various situations and I don’t care what other people think about it. Not all doctors and medical staff appreciate it when you question them, I’ve experienced that it may result in angry indignant responses.

    Reply

  • How true this is! While nurses and doctors are the medical professionals doing their job on the daily, we know our children better than anyone and what is ‘normal’ for them. I would always speak up if I had noticed any changes in my child’s health and encourage other parents to do so too. No question is silly!

  • This really is such an important issue and a good topic to discuss with people, I am often surprised that people are worried about being judged. This is not something I care about; the priority is for the care and health of everyone is my family. Parents know their children and need to work with health professionals for the best outcomes for their children.

  • This is such an important issue to raise, and no one should ever feel ashamed, nervous or that they are being OTT for advocating for their kids, themselves or loves ones in hospital. In QLD we have Ryan’s Rule. A three step process where your concern will be escalated if they believe the patients condition isn’t improving or is worsening.

    Reply

  • I have never been afraid to advocate for my children and partner and extended family and also friends. It is so important to listen and to trust intuition. When people have not listened, I have persevered and kept on with insisting on care and making sure they truly listened and took action.
